Why is politics important?

Thomas Mann once said 'everything is politics' - he's not far from the truth. Your daily life is the way it is because of the system of government in your country, which influences and is influenced by politics.

If you look out of the window and see a road, that's probably because a politician somewhere decided to have it built and maintained. If you learnt Maths at school, a politician somewhere helped influence the curriculum and what you learnt. If you switched on a light, a politician somewhere decided to build a power station to allow this to run in your home.

Current affairs, the news and politics affect our daily lives to a great extent: so, it only seems right that we understand at least a little about them.

If we don't understand what's going on around us, how can we hope to bring about change?
